Dr. MaryKate Morse on Mentoring: Stories and Insights

Does this sound … or feel … familiar?

“Oftentimes in a denomination or a church, you cannot just say whatever is going on inside of you. It’s not good stewardship. You are the pastor. You do have to be the adult.”

That’s how Dr. MaryKate Morse, a longtime friend and colleague of Leighton Ford and dean of Portland Seminary, describes the reality of being a pastor or ministry leader.

“To have people completely outside of your circle creates a really safe place for you to be yourself. Highly confidential”

In a nutshell, that’s the mentoring ministry of Leighton Ford Ministries.  To provide Safe Times, Safe Places, and Safe Friends to journey with and support ministry leaders over the long haul.

MaryKate recently joined the Monday Morning Pastor podcast to answer the question, “Can you survive without a mentor?”  Over the course of 45 minutes, she shared several accessible, engaging, and insightful stories about the need for mentoring pastors and the impact of mentoring communities.

If you are a ….

  • …younger pastor wondering if you really need a mentor
  • …experienced pastor wondering if you have something to offer as a mentor
  • …ministry leader wanting to learn more about mentoring

… then I encourage you to listen to this podcast!

READING LIST: Lifelong Leadership

Dr. MaryKate Morse is also lead author of Lifelong Leadership, an LFM resource and practical guide for supporting ministry leaders over the long haul by creating safe times, safe places, and safe people through mentoring communities.

If you’d like to go deeper on “whole-life mentoring” and “mentoring communities,” we encourage you to add Lifelong Leadership to your reading list.
