What To Do On A Sleepy Saturday Afternoon (Leighton Ford)
What to do
on a chilly, blustery Saturday afternoon
in November?
I asked my dog Buddy
who was lying beside me
as I read the paper.
He half opened an eye,
put his head back down.
“Oh, well,” I said, “I’m going to take a nap.”
That was agreeable with him.
When I woke I suggested a walk.
His tail twitched. He was agreeable again.
We drove to a small fashionable shopping center,
shuffled along, window-shopped.
A hand-made sign in the window of
the impeccable pig
caught our attention.
I was sad
but then I
went
SHOPPING
Buddy gazed. Wrinkled his nose.
“What are you thinking?”
“When I’m sad,” he said,
(and I’m sure I heard him right)
“I just go sniffing.”
“Nice idea” I said.
“A lot cheaper.
And probably just as good.”
